Wide World Questions

On October 6, 2008, in Australia, Emigration, Global Issues, by ness

So here’s a question for anybody out there reading, who wants to answer…

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Now this is *not* one of those ‘money is no object’ things where  you tell me that you want to live on a 60ft yacht moored in Monte Carlo moored opposite the swish casino okay? If you realistically *had* to move, where would you go.

This is a two part question – well gosh doggone it if this isn’t starting to sound like an exam!

Part 1: Where would you move to in your *own* country (i.e. the same country where you are now)

Part 2: Where would you move to in *another* country.

Oooh, wait there’s a part three…and WHY??

Here’s my reason for asking…

Hubby and I have been doing a lot of talking lately. We still really want to get to Australia just as soon as we can. That’s our goal. It depends largely on whether or not we can transfer through hubby’s company. That can either happen tomorrow. Next year. Or never.   Our discussions have largely centered around creating a Plan B.   This plan centers around the idea that ‘never’ might happen, and if it does – where do we want to go instead of Australia if it comes to that.   The bottom line is we know we want to leave here.

So, we came up with 5 alternatives. Anybody want to hazard a guess as to what they are? 5 different countries (not including SA or Australia) that we could potentially see ourselves living in – and where there are currently opportunities in my hubby’s line of work.

Oooh, I can’t wait to hear your answers!!

My new post is up at MacNessa “Apple iStore, Thai Food and the USS Theodore Roosevelt” if you want to read it.

If anyone out there lives in North Carolina and you’re on the look out for North Carolina health insurance then please do have a look at that link for some super options.

I think I have had this conversation about a million times, and thats just this weekend!

Okay so here is my VERY long answer:

    1) In South Africa – I would of said CT, but now that I am here, I have realised that I need to have my Family and friends around, so I am going to say Jhb, because that is where there are. In terms of beauty and lifestyle, it would still be CT. You see thats the dilemma we are facing now.

    2) In the world – oooh this is my favourite topic right now. Okay so this is my thinking…..
Most SA families head to Aus and NZ, and I have been to NZ afew times and LOVE it there, we have family there, so moving across would be easy (kinda). HOWEVER, I am in love with America. I know i have only been there on holidays, but I just think it is everything perfect, in fact i think i might just be obssessed. I have even put my name in the green card lottery. So, what I am getting to is this… if we would ever leave, I think it is SUCH A HUGE DECISION and SUCH A HUGE EMOTIONAL & PHYSICAL MOVE, that if I am going to do it, I should move to the country that is first on my list, and not just got to Aus or NZ, because, either most South Africans do, or because t would be easier because we have family there. I dont want to get to another country after all that and then say I wish we had gone soem where else ….okay hope this all makes sense.
Oh, and it would probably NY, Boston somewhere north-east.

    3. Okay here is my guess at your alternatives…
    - America
    - New Zealand
    - Maybe Canada
    - Somewhere,in the East.

    Definitly not the UK though

Okay better getr back to work
    Okay thats about it

Great questions! As you know, I live in the US and am not overly fond of my country (which I realize sounds horrible to someone who doesn’t live here). BUT, there are some awesome cities here, and if I could move I would, without a doubt, move to NYC. So much excitement, so much diversity, and so much to do. Love NYC. Love.

If I could move outside of the US, I would move to London. I lived there for 6 months, and loved the city.

Hmmm… now, where you would move. I’m guessing:

    The US
    Canada
    Germany
    Japan
    UAE

I am a shameless Capetonian . Love it. Forced to leave Cape Town? I would head to Port Elizabeth.

Further afield….these are our options. Fortunately we could pretty much go anywhere based on the mans skills. In order of (my) preference: Syndey, Melbourne, Atlanta US.

I think you may be keen to head to the States or Canada. Maybe even Dubai…..

I am a Christchurch girl born and bred, and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else in NZ however you wanted somewhere else in my country so I would head north possibly to Whangarei where it is a lot warmer. As for another country we would head to the Gold Coast in Australia.

I think you are looking at New Zealand (biased of course), Canada, America, France and Malaysia.

  5. [...] of all, thank you to Hayley, Kristi, Melody and Vicki who all answered yesterday’s questions so beautifully in the comments!  I was so interested to read your answers. Though most of you were [...]
