Surprisingly we *do* get out once in awhile. This time we went somewhere nearby. The Zoo.
Now, I’m not a fan of zoos. In general. While I understand that the sacrifice of freedom, of these few animals, helps to save thousands of their brethren in the wild, by educating us vile humans who manage to wreck just about every eco system on this planet at some point or another, it still feels wrong somehow.
But at this particular zoo, and they’ve had some bad press lately, with people complaining about the size of the enclosures, the blandness of them, I was in fact pleased to see, that many of the animals are in fact rescue cases from zoos in places like Angola and elsewhere in deepest darkest Africa, where their conditions were far, FAR worse than here. Here they are fed, entertained, and given space to be.
Hubby actually raised a valid point, when we went last Sunday (before his knee operation), is that instead of sitting around criticising these places, we should visit, them. Pay them our entrance fees, and help them to improve by supporting them.
Hear Hear.
Here are some Lion Posters that I have developed from the photos I took last Sunday.
Look at this magnificent male lion. He was clearly the alpha male. There were males and females in his enclosure, and he’d clearly had a go at some of the ‘lesser’ males, as they were a little beaten up. But that is the way of the big cat, domination and all. Clearly this lion was lying on top of his shall we call it a jungle gym? Surveying his pride, and enjoying the afternoon sunshine.
Zoo, or no Zoo, this is a magnificent specimen. Would you look at the size of his paws? We went up close to the part of the enclosure through which they obviously feed the lions, and there were some females lying around inside snoring, and purring, and the sound was *incredible*.
Here is something quite special. A rare white lioness. Many people always believed the white lions, and lionesses to be a subspecies of lion, but it is in fact only a colour variation. It’s incredibly rare, but they seem to have rehabilitated the breeding programme, somewhat, and many white lions have since been released into the wild again. Aren’t they breathtakingly amazing?
I wish I’d had a stronger zoom with me, and that that male had been awake (instead of snoring on his back with all four legs in the air – and yes, I would have taken a shot of that, if he hasn’t had his backside and ‘bits’ facing me), but still I’m really pleased with the shot that I did get.
If anyone would like to buy a hi-resolution download of these three posters, then I will donate 75 % of the price to the Tygerberg Zoo, in Cape Town, South Africa. The remaining 25 % will go towards covering my internet costs.
One purchase gets you all three posters – in hi resolution (300 dpi) digital format. The posters are ‘hi-res’ enough to print up to A0. (which is big)
Just $20.00 (USD) will go a long way toward making these beautiful creatures more comfortable and to raising awareness of all the animals at the zoo. I will be happy to provide proof of deposit into the Zoo’s account, once your purchase is complete and delivered.

Please email me after your purchase or donation, so that I can arrange the delivery of your hi-resolution digital files, and receipt of your donation.
Please note that I am not affiliated in any way, to the Tygerberg Zoo. I am simply a citizen who feels like I can do something to help them by raising awareness, and hopefully some funds, because I care about the animals.
If you are unable to purchase, or donate, then please visit the zoo, when you are in town. Every visitor helps.
