Home Perks

The UK Lotto sent me a free voucher to ‘play’ for my birthday. I believe that the jackpot tomorrow night is approximately fifteen million pounds sterling (about 30 million USD).

As is always the case when something like this happens (yes I redeemed the voucher already) the husband and I like to have the fifteen million pound fantasy (heads out the gutter please) talk about what we would do with the money.

We talk about some philanthropical stuff that we would do, you know, because we *do* care, and it’s always a good thing to let the universe know that you wouldn’t be totally self-indulgent should you win it all.

Then we have the ridiculous and self-indulgent talk about that goes along the lines of, “Okay, a bunch ‘o money has just hit the account, we allow ourselves to spend “insert ridiculous-though predetermined amount of cash here” and we have to do so at the local mall…what would we buy? What would you buy?

Then invariably our talk turns to doing things like home improvements, getting a beach pool (love those!), installing central heating/air conditioning, getting an air filter the likes of which we only see in episodes of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, me stocking the fiction library or the kindle or the iPad ! The awesome all-apple  home computer network we would install, all totally wireless and amazing.

I could go on for hours, if I hadn’t inhaled two VAWTERS and was now feeling a bit like my 5 hours of sleep a night is extremely insufficient…

Go on, tell me what you would spend your “totally self-indulgent” portion of your lottery winnings on…

Friday Afternoon Bullets:

(Because I’m short on time before the afternoon school run hits).

  • I am selling my piano. I can hardly believe it myself. Had it since 1983. It’s time for it to go. The boys are interested in it, but they don’t respect it. For me, it just hurts to look at it, so it must go.
  • I am still smiling from ear to ear about all the great graphic design work in my life right now. Yes please universe, I would love even more.
  • This whole phoning for home insurance quotes stuff *every* month is quite tiresome, yes, but necessary. Insurance is something we don’t need until we need it so better to have it. Plus if you phone around often enough you can usually lower your monthly cost. We’ve basically halved our costs in about 8 months by doing this.
  • I finally finished Breaking Dawn. Wow. Love it. Best book I have read in years.
  • I am getting by at night on about 5 hours sleep. Both my boys are sleeping through the night now (or at least they have been for the past week – touch wood) so the only thing keeping me up is me. I’m up till around 00h30 usually working, or god forbid having some fun on facebook/blogging/catching up on my rss reader then I sleep till around 5h30 then start all over again. As long as I have a cup of coffee in the morning, it’s going okay. If I can keep this up, I will be the most productive person ever. Heh.
  • We have applied for a new rental, but are still waiting to hear about the house. It’s walking distance from my sons school which is *perfect* fingers crossed we get it. I am *so* sick of the place we’re living in right now you  have no idea. The new house is in a secure complex as well – which frankly would feel like a huge weight off my shoulders.
  • Anyhoo, must go and fetch one of the offspring now…toodles peeps.

I just had a small “Twilight Zone” moment.

I was standing in the kitchen preparing a marinade for the beef we’re having tonight for dinner, when I picked up my blackberry to read an email that just pinged in.

It was one of those ‘so-and-so’ is now following you on twitter emails. The weird thing about it – or at least the ‘Twilight Zone’ moment came about because I realized that the person who was now following me (Jaden from Steamy Kitchen) was none other than the author of the book Steamy Kitchen - whose recipe I was using for the marinade. A recipe that I actually picked up via the Pioneer Woman, when she made it and published it on her blog (with Steamy Kitchen’s permission of course). For the foodies among you, I’m talking about the Beef with Broccoli. It’s insanely awesome. Jaden also has a cook book out, take a look here if you’re interested.

It just *really* struck my how much blogging, and bloggers have become a part of my life, and this has been an amazingly good thing.

I think my husband would agree that the entry of The Pioneer Woman’s recipes into his world has only been a good thing too. He’s practically swinging from the light fixture with happiness about the extension of my repetoire. His waistline does tend to argue this point, and whenever he requests that blasted fried chicken recipe, I try not to be too quick to point out that unless he’s about to go and saddle a horse and spend 8 hours either riding the range, castrating calves or being engaged in other waist reducing pursuits, then I probably shouldn’t make the chicken dish. Yet Again.

I hear a joyful clucking arise from the nearby poultry farm (or was that just my stomach?).

Anyhoo, apologies for my longer than normal absence. I’ve been engrossed (first in Eclipse ) and now currently in Breaking Dawn , and I swear if anyone puts spoilers in the comments box, I am just telling you now…I know where you blog

Reading the book, and dealing with the amount of work that I have (forgetting for just a moment the two little male darlings of my life who currently require much fetching and taking, and tending and feeding) at the moment must be something akin to Bella’s bloodlust. Seriously. I mean hello – that freaking book calls to me while I’m busy getting on with things like work, eating, bathing, and yes I consider taking it to the loo just to get some alone time.

TV is a *thing of the past* I tell you. The ONLY TV that I am currently watching is Greys Anatomy on a Monday night at 19h30. That is IT.

Things are going so well right now work wise, I have a steady stream of work that is keeping me happily occupied (I’m definitely doing the right thing for me, I mean how many people get *excited* to sit down at the computer and work???) the only down side of course being that working keeps me from reading the rest of the book. But I’m being a good girl and getting it all done to the best of my ability. In a way I am glad that I am dragging it out just a little for myself.  I usually don’t read books, so much as devour them, and since I read really quickly (Eclipse took me a little under 24 hrs – WITH all of lifes interruptions) I really am trying to enjoy every last detail of this story.

Anyway since I promised to take some photos (I didn’t take nearly as many as I should have) of the last few days food exploits I’ll leave you with a photo of Bakerella’s Fast Food Cupcakes, mine aren’t nearly as elegant perfect as hers, but dayam they are delicious!  I should also point out that putting cupcakes in this format, completely threw my boys for a loop. They are both refusing to touch them…leaving all the more to the hubby and me. (This is a bad thing, but it’s also a good thing :)

cupcakes

I forgot to add – that bakerella used buttercream icing as her ‘cheese’ but I have used fondant. For those of you who are confused – this is a vanilla cupcake, with a brownie as the ‘patty’ with buttercream lettuce and tomato, and yellow fondant icing as the cheese. It’s very, very naughty.

Today, I’m prepping for a little catering project (totally for me, not a paid gig or anything) the likes of which will thrill my family’s tastebuds, and will exasperate our jeans.

If I were as organised as the Pioneer Woman, then I would be tweeting about it like she does on Thanksgiving, or sharing all her recipes like she does every other time, but for the most part, I’m going to a) try and get done and b) maybe take some photos. So here’s hoping I get some photos up early tomorrow.

Basically, I’m making all our favourite snacks and eats, because I’m celebrating my birthday tomorrow. Yes it was actually last week, but for various reasons, we decided that tomorrow would be a better day to celebrate.

So! I’m going to be making:

The Pioneer Womans Fried Chicken Strips (in hors d’ouevres size) with sweet chilli dipping mayonnaise

Glacé Cherries Wrapped in bacon – no link, as it’s a three step process – wrap cherries in streaky bacon, secure with toothpick and fry!

Lamingtons (in honour of the fact that it is Australia Day tomorrow – 26 Jan)

Bakerella’s Vanilla Cupcake/Brownie ‘Hamburgers‘. (no meat in these babies!)

So basically there are enough saturated fats in this selection, to practically ensure some sort of cardio-graphical-myopathilogical-infarction-related event… hmmm perhaps a look at somemedical coding training courses might be in order before I get started?

It’s basically a snacky, picky, nibbly little soireé for my family (clearly the chicken strips and bacon cherries are with my boys in mind) and for some family members who are stopping by after work for a bite and a glass of vino.

To celebrate ME. Yay! I do so love adoration, adulation and the spotlight.

Plus if I can pull off all these fiddly food things, it’s just another reason for gathering praise. (No I’m not a hopelessly arrogant attention seeker, but I *am* talking myself out of self-esteem issues, so bear with me mmkay?)

Plus! I get to wear the über cool, so chic, aussie flag apron that Eatshootblog sent me! I may just pair it with the matching bandana!

Okay, time to head out(of my blog), because I’m going to be flat out like a lizard drinking! (tee-hee).

Happy Monday everybody!

Edward Cullen and Jacob Black

On January 23, 2010, in Movies, by ness

So I finally got around to seeing New Moon about 2 weeks ago, just a few days before it was taken off the big screen circuit. It was a close call whether or not to go and see Avatar again, but in the end the desire to see something I hadn’t seen yet won out over something that I knew was *awesome* and something which was only now picking up steam in SA, and had been sold out for a few days (my mom and her fiance tried to go and see it – but sold out!).

So hubby and I went off to see New Moon.

Up until then I hadn’t read any of the books, so only the odd preview on youtube had prepared me for what lay ahead.

I must admit, I think that I enjoyed it even more than the first one. Remember I didn’t have the book knowledge to compare it to, and I found the pace of the first one, just a scoache on the slow side.  When Taylor Lautner appeared all shirtless and shorthaired after his first ‘transformation’ I quite frankly, nearly fell off my seat. My husbands words were, “Um, yah. He’s like…perfect…isn’t he?” and then turned to me. I merely held up a hand, nodded and then said, “Shhh, don’t drag me back to reality just yet okay?”

Wowser.

Well, hello there Mr Bicep!

Is it okay to be perving a grown up ‘Shark-Boy’??

Ryan Reynolds in Blade III is the closest I’ve seen yet to this kind of perfect physique. Hello 8 pack!

Anyway, honestly I’ve always found Robert Pattinson (when in character) just a little on the naff side. He’ll always be Cedric Diggory to me. I think that the whole vampire skin in the sun = shimmery diamonds, was a brilliant idea of Stephenie Meyer’s. Normally I avoid vampire flicks like the plague, but this quadrilogy I could get my teeth stuck into. (!)

Which brings me to my next point. My mom, actually paid enough attention to what I was saying, when talking to her last week, and bought me “Eclipse” the book for my birthday this week.

Cool hey? Took me exactly 24 hours to finish it. When I read, my family starve, the house gets dirty. There is no escaping the pull of a killer book. (!)

It was really nice having seen the movie just a few days ago, and then being able to pick up where it left off. In fact, one of the reasons that I think I got into a so quickly, is that I already had the characters appearances and locations visualised thanks to having seen the movies first.  Same thing with the Harry Potter series, at least for the first two – I saw the movies first.

What do you guys prefer? Movies first? Or do you like having the book background to fill in the bits that the movie leaves out?

More importantly, please answer this question for me, Team Edward? or Team Jacob?
