I *still* haven’t seen this movie, but I’m glad to see that Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon have been nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Oscars for Invictus.
I’m always really impressed when big Hollywood names make the effort to do the South African accent right. The funny thing is, that I know it’s right, when it gives me that ‘nails on a blackboard’ feeling that most Saffer accents give me, ha ha, this includes my own sometimes.
In this interview on CBS, Matt Damon hits it head on, and then says to the interviewer that it’s like gymnastics in your mouth. Leonardo diCaprio is another one who got it right in Blood Diamond , although his character was from both Zimbabwe (the accent is similar) and South Africa.
I will definitely take it out on DVD when it hits our video store.
Most South Africans remember where they were, during this rugby game, the same way people remember where they were when Armstrong walked on the moon, or when JFK was shot.
It is one of those defining moments in history.
It may actually have also been the last world cup where I actively supported the boks. I suppose that’s sad in a way, but I struggle to identify with supporting ‘local’ these days. It’s probably because that time, was a time of great hope and change, and freedom and excitement, and sadly 15 years later, here we are, and the government have let down *everyone*.

Brilliant movie. I hated the way Damon spoke i refuse to believe we all speak like that, Francois maybe but not the rest of us. Here of course i am painted with the same brush as in all SA speak like Damon in the movie.
I haven’t even heard of this movie! I do love Matt Damon though, so I’ll probably see it eventually.
Haven’t seen the movie yet but whenever someone tries to put on the Aussie accent it can be fingernails on the blackboard, too lol.
Not into rugby but I can recall the return of Sth Africa to international cricket and how the Poms wouldn’t give an inch despite the weather and the last over..the Poms won the cricket but the Springboks won the crowd.
