I think I might need some.
Wowzer, it’s just that I feel like I have reached my limit on so many fronts. Right now as I’m typing this I have a 2yr old screaming blue m*rder at my feet kicking the legs of my desk (and no I will NOT give him attention while he’s doing it because any attention – even to tell him to stop it, is attention, so he wins), the husband is feigning deafness in front of the TV watching SA vs Wales Rugby (thanks darling and I’m only about 5 days behind on my work and your support is so thoughtful) and the 4yr old is whining that I’m not helping me build an airport for him.
I’m almost willing to try for a third child, just to try and even out the male/female ration in this household. But the threat of creating a fourth male and the ensuing testosterone booster that that would mean for the other three…oy vey…
On the plus side, the kiddos are getting so much better, Skip is almost completely over his tonsilitis and Flip had a physio appointment for his pneumonia recovery and the physio said that she couldn’t hear any more phlegm on his chest, so it looks as though he is over the worst now.
I’m trying to find a way to a) have some kid free time and b) catch up on work. If I worked in an office this would be easy, since I’d just bugger off to the office when I needed to, but this office at home, comes with two complimentary (sweet when they want to be) little boys, whose sole aim in life right now, is to annoy one another
Maybe I’ll try and sneak off to a movie tomorrow, any suggestions as to what I should go see? I wish Eclipse was on already.

So, my recent 3 day hiatus, was more than just illness. In fact it wasn’t illness at all.
Apologies dear readers, for having deceived you so ruthlessly but you’ll see why I had to in just a minute.
Today, I write this blog post to you from my 19th floor apartment in Manhattan.
That’s right. NYC. USA.
So, seriously…how awesome is the view? Please excuse the cheezy grin on my face, I never look good when I’m trying to take a photo of myself AND the background.
I had forgotten just how much I loved this city until the moment we touched down, and drove back through the craziness that is NYC traffic, over the bridge to our new (for the next six months…fully company funded) home on the upper east side.
Yeah, I know…*so* gossip girl…snort. I’m terrified I’m going to bump into someone famous every time I step outside my door. Methinks I’m going to have to ditch the blundstones in favour of something a little more SATC?
There is no way we could afford such a swish place ourselves, without hubby’s company having funded our first six months accommodation until we find our own place when after hubs has completed the six month phase in programme for expats, and we transfer out to the regional office in Chicago where we’ll find something a little more suburban I think.
While we’re here, I’m going to absolutely binge on everything that makes NYC, and you guys are SO coming along for this blogging ride baby!
It’s been a tad nerve wracking getting on and off the subway with two kids in tow, but luckily hubs has the first week off to acclimate so it’s been the four of us together. I think when he starts work on Monday, we’re going to rack up a small fortune in cab fares
I can’t tell you how awesome it is to go and do stuff out and about with the kids though, we’ve already been to the Natural History Museum, and the Guggenheim, yeah, two boys under 5 in a building that looks like *fun* is meant to be had in it…I know.
Okay, okay. Is anybody fooled? If you are, well then thank you for playing along with me this morning. Clearly I’ve been having a little Friday morning fun.
So, I’m not in Manhattan. Hiss! Boo!
But, I have however, during the last three days undergone the change…
…and become a vampire.
So Eclipse opens June 30th. Did I mention this already? Yeah. Can’t-wait.

So you guys know that I am an affiliate for Amazon right?
That means that Amazon purchases made by someone, who viewed a particular product on my site earns me a tiny small commission. It’s really a hit and miss thing, because the purchase has to be made within 24 hours etc etc, anyhoo, it’s been working nicely the last few months, and I’ve been getting a little Amazon gift card every month for the last few months. (FYI you can choose to get a cheque sent to you, or gift cards etc). I chose the gift card route, because the threshold to get paid out is much lower. Plus, it’s not huge amounts of money, so the little I make has thusfar netted me a couple of books for myself and Skippy, and just this morning I made my first Kindle
purchase! (a book not the device)
First of all, I opened up Kindle for Mac, also available for PC, and various iPods/iPads/iPhones (worldwide) and even Blackberry (only in the USA so far), and they allowed me to download a free sample of the book I was interested in. I was really surprised when it gave me the first whole chapter of the Kindle version of Twilight.
Well of course I picked something that I know I’m going to like, and considering that I have only seen the movies of the first two, I’m really interested in reading the book versions.
How could I resist when the whole book only costs $8 (ZAR 60!!!) and gets delivered *instantly* to my ‘kindle for mac’ program!? I mean hello! Plus if you consider that it was basically free, because I had an Amazon Gift card to use, then it becomes a no brainer.
So now the hubby and kiddos will be happily tuning to ESPN to watch something testosteron-ey like atv racing, I can be happily ensconced in my study, blissfully alternating between the happy reality of graphic design work and waist deep in Photoshop or in Illustrator
, depending on what I’m doing, and then disappearing into Forks, WA when I need a little escapism.
Have I mentioned before how much I love technology!?
Incidentally on a semi-unrelated note, Adobe have just launched the CS5 version of their Creative Suite, so if you have been wanting to upgrade to CS4 and haven’t done it yet, keep an eye on the prices, since they always seem to drop right after a newer version has been released! I’m running CS4 myself, and I’ll probably wait until CS6 to upgrade, unless I win the lottery before that.

Today the husband has gone back to work after a short holiday break. Flipper is back at school on the 13th, and Skippy on the 19th. Which means 1 week with two kids (and trying to work) and then 1 week with 1 kid, who got a new bike for Christmas and thinks that being indoors is for the criminally insane.
He can’t be outdoors practicing on his bicycle without me, so, well I’m sure you’re feeling me rejoice for the two weeks ahead of me. (sheesh Kristi, I was just going through my feed reader and saw your post – the opening theme is the same – I swear I wasn’t copying you!)
He’s taken to the bicycle really well, getting him to understand pedaling took some huge encouragement and a truckload of patience, but once he figured out to keep his feet drawing circles (instead of going up and down – because he has ‘back-pedal’ breaks) he’s now a pro at it.
Any excuse to ride his bike (in the house!) from his bedroom to the lounge, and no matter how many times we threaten that Santa will see him doing it and take the bike away
Since I’m a stickler for fairness with my boys, here is an equally cute one of Flipper, and yes, I *love* him in that shirt.
It’s the one we bought for Skippy in Australia when we were there in 2007, and it fits Flip perfectly now. Plus it keeps my manifestations at a high level. Yes we still want to go there, things are in the pipeline, more on this later.
Incidentally Flip also got a bike of sorts for Christmas, more like a tricycle, with a handle at the back for whichever poor sucker has to push him in the direction his cute little index points, and of whom he demands, “THERE!” ever 10 seconds.
We didn’t go ‘away’ as such over the holiday period. We just stayed at home and did a few good day trips here and there.
Would you believe that I forgot my camera, like every single time? Shocking. I know.
So I had to rely on my cellphone for pictures.
We visited a wine farm that we’d not been to before, after finding a rather incredible map, on the local municipality website, which showed all the wine farms and other attractions that are family friendly.
A visit to the croc farm, butterfly sanctuary and giraffe house are on the cards for a few weekend drives while the weather is still good.
Speaking of which, the weather has been really odd. I can count on one hand the number of days we’ve had, which were ‘sweltering’. Normally we melt for at least a week on the trot. I am a huge fan of the swimming pool, but have only been in it once.
Planet? Are you listening? Please don’t kill us all with climate change just yet ? Kai thanx bai.
I think Skippy is blowing a kiss at his girlfriend or something!
Delvera Wine Estate, and in fact yesterday, we met up with an old friend (from Australia) at Eaglevlei, which was even nicer than Delvera (in terms of child friendliness), where I neglected to take any photos at all!
So for the time being, we’re all ‘wine-farmed-out’. I mean really, how many times in one week can you sit and have a nice meal, watch your kids play, and throw back some crisp Chenin blanc? Really such a hardship.
The photo of me with the kids was taken at Delvera, along with this one of the play area peeking out amongst all the big ferns and trees.
On New Years Eve (during the day) we drove up the west coast for a change of scenery.
It’s sparse, and flat out there with lots of bush scrub and cobras (great!) but we were headed for one little turquoise jewel out there, and stopped off at Langebaan Lagoon.
Now the beachfront and lagoon area are very nice.
There are two restaurants where you sit on a terrace, just metres from the sandy beach. Being New Years Eve, of course, they were absolutely packed, and we had no intention of going there.
We rather just wanted to spend some time on the beach.
There are some quite swish housing estates that have sprung up, a golf estate near the exit from the highway, and another estate nearer the large shopping mall.
But the rest of the town, I’m afraid to say, well frankly, it’s a dump.
But the beach made up for the rest of the town, and we had a great time letting the kids splash around for awhile in the waves. If we go back again, we’ll probably stay overnight at Club Mykonos, so that the kids can spend a few hours there and have some fun with their buckets and spades etc.
I’m quite impressed with my blackberry actually, it only has a little 2mp camera, but it’s handy enough to take pics, and then shove back in my pocket. I would have been a little more precious with my DSLR on the beach, and worry about the sand and water getting in.
We decided to take a route home, which turned out to be a bit of an adventure. At one stage, we were in what can only be described accurately as MOFO GANSTALAND.
I think I held my breath the entire time, and had to resist to hide my kids under the seats lest they get caught by a stray bullet or something. We were getting some very strange looks from some of the people on the sidewalk, as if they couldn’t believe these dumb folks were taking a drive through their hood. Frightening.
Anyway, we made it through, and then the road became absolutely beautiful. Aside from the pockmarked tar, which had last been resurfaced circa 1982, this is what it looked like.
Yes, a road, overhung with my beloved gum trees that I can never seem to get enough of. Mere midgets in comparison to the ones we saw in the Dandenongs (which burned down on Black Saturday) but still gum trees, and still beautiful.
Hello, my idea of heaven.
Farm land, gum trees. (faints). If not for the whole gangstanland thing going on less than 3km away from here, then it could have been a nice place to stop. Perhaps it used to be, a long time ago.
We went and saw Avatar on the 2nd of Jan. If you follow that link, it will take you to the review of the movie that I did on NessWorld. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you are missing out.
For now it’s back to the mundane everyday, new year, new budgets, new monthly auto insurance quotes to keep our costs low, I swear they know my voice by now!
Time to feed the kiddos and get them involved in some kind of meaningful activity for the next few hours so that I can get some work done.
Hi Ho Silver.
Oh and did I mention that the husband sadistically turned off our satellite TV connection again (now that he’s back at work), now I rarely watch *any* TV anymore, but on the 18th of January Greys Anatomy Season VI is starting AND I have these two weeks to get through juggling kids…time to rely on the ‘educational dvd’s I suppose if I want to get anything productive done.
Strength and Honour.

Invictus
I *still* haven’t seen this movie, but I’m glad to see that Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon have been nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Oscars for Invictus
.
I’m always really impressed when big Hollywood names make the effort to do the South African accent right. The funny thing is, that I know it’s right, when it gives me that ‘nails on a blackboard’ feeling that most Saffer accents give me, ha ha, this includes my own sometimes.
In this interview on CBS, Matt Damon hits it head on, and then says to the interviewer that it’s like gymnastics in your mouth. Leonardo diCaprio is another one who got it right in Blood Diamond
, although his character was from both Zimbabwe (the accent is similar) and South Africa.
I will definitely take it out on DVD when it hits our video store.
Most South Africans remember where they were, during this rugby game, the same way people remember where they were when Armstrong walked on the moon, or when JFK was shot.
It is one of those defining moments in history.
It may actually have also been the last world cup where I actively supported the boks. I suppose that’s sad in a way, but I struggle to identify with supporting ‘local’ these days. It’s probably because that time, was a time of great hope and change, and freedom and excitement, and sadly 15 years later, here we are, and the government have let down *everyone*.
