Moving

Well, our house lease is up at the end of July. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we’re likely to be emigrating by then, so we are going to be house hunting for another rental quite soon.  A lot of people ask us, why move? Why not extend the lease? It will certainly save a lot of hassle etc

So here are our reasons:

This house is old. The plumbing is bad (the shower is not a shower, simply a sprinkle).

The wiring is dodgy, in heavy rains, our bathroom light stops/starts working as if it’s possessed. Clearly, not a safe situation to be in.

The house owner, is having money troubles, and although we rent through an agency, people (debt collectors) keep turning up and looking for the owner because HE TELLS THEM HE STILL LIVES HERE. The other day some people turned up, and I could have sworn they were ‘leg breakers!’ Not a situation I want to be in!

The house is not conducive to entertaining at all.

We need more space, or a better layout (read I need an office).

So, we’re on the look out for a 4 bedroom house (or 3 with a study) in a decent and secure area. We’ll probably sign another 12 month lease, but with a 60 day notice clause that if we get emigration approval, we can give 60 days notice and then leave.

On the plus side, renting does have it’s benefits, you don’t get attached to the place, and you don’t have to worry about the current economic client playing havoc with your equity. However on the downside, you don’t personalise and improve the place. That means I don’t bother gardening (aside from basic maintenance) and ‘prettying’ up, and it’s sucking the life out of me. We also make sure that we don’t install any fitted furniture like an LCD on the wall or audio racks for the stereo etc , which would make our lives more comfortable and organised.

So moving it is. I get to purge more stuff (hooray) and declutter, we dump the stuff we’re not emigrating with, and pack up and move. It’s more affordable than people think, if you use a smaller less well known company to move, the last time we moved it cost us less than R2000, and that was including R600 for my piano, because we did so much ourselves.

Those are our plans for the immediate future. Unless some incredible overseas job offers drop out of the sky.
